Why buy space heaters?

Space heaters are ideal for use as a standalone heating method, or in addition to central heating. They're excellent for use by tradesmen working in disconnected properties or in colder working environments, like warehouses where there's no central heating system.

Space heater types

Ceramic space heaters   -   Available in fan and non-fan versions, these space heaters are quick to heat up. They use the means of convection to transfer electrical energy from ceramic plates into the room.

Fan space heaters   -   This type of heater transfers heat from a metal heating coil or filament and quickly spreads it around the room by means of a fan. It's heavy on electricity use however and cannot be set to a specific temperature.

Infrared space heaters   -   These heaters utilise infrared waves to heat a room and are the most energy-efficient on this list.

Oil-filled space heaters   -   These heaters must be filled with diathermic oil and plugged into an electrical connection. Diathermic oil is resistant to chemical oxidation and provides a high level of thermal conductivity to spread the heat.

Propane space heaters   -   Working with propane alone with no need for electrical power, these space heaters produce high heat levels and are available with or without a fan.

Panel space heaters   -   These heaters can be wall-mounted or freestanding and plug into an electricity source. They're not as effective at producing heat as the other heaters on this list however and are often preferred for their sleek design.

FAQs

Can I leave a space heater running overnight?

We don't recommend leaving any type of portable heater unattended as this is a fire risk. A gas-powered heater could overheat, while an electric space heater could short-circuit leaving you vulnerable to fire and smoke inhalation while you sleep.

Is it cheaper to use a space heater to heat one room or the whole house?

It's generally agreed that heating a single room with a space heater is more efficient than heating a whole house. Heating a single room allows for the temperature in that room to reach the optimum level where the heater can then be turned off.

Unless you're using an industrial-sized space heater to heat your home, you'll never achieve the same warmth as central heating or electric radiators, and space heaters can run the cost of heating up to double the normal costs for central heating.
