## What are safety shoes?
Just like safety boots, safety shoes protect the entire foot with a safety toecap and mid-sole protection. Unlike a safety boot, safety shoes do not extend up and over the ankle.

## Why safety shoes?
Safety shoes are an ideal alternative for workers who find safety boots uncomfortable, and safety trainers too casual. Progress in safety technology has allowed for ergonomic and lightweight designs to be developed. Modern business safety shoes, such as those designed by Uvex® provide excellent protection while looking right at home when worn with a suit.

## When are safety shoes used?
Where risks have been identified in a workplace, safety footwear must be worn to ensure compliance with safety regulations. While risk management plans should be in operation to prevent falling and crushing accidents from happening, safety shoes and other complimentary PPE will help to protect against injury for that 'just in case' scenario.

## Safety shoe types
Within footwear safety standards, EN ISO 20345, there are six basic safety ratings, also known as S ratings. These are used to categorise the safety features present in each shoe, from SB (Safety Basic) through to S5 (leak-proof with a puncture-resistant mid-sole).

In addition to these ratings, there are three slip-resistance ratings that identify the testing methods used on each shoe.

• **SRA**   -   Slip-resistant on ceramic tile with a diluted soap solution on the surface

• **SRB**   -   Slip-resistant on steel flooring with glycerol spillage

• **SRC**   -   Slip-resistant during both of the above tests

## Considerations when choosing a safety shoe
• **Fitting** - Poorly fitted safety shoes won't provide the protection required and may even fail in a hazardous situation. When worn all day, every day, a bad fit can result in painful, and sometimes permanent foot issues, such as bunions or corns. A good tip is to wear work socks when trying on new safety shoes to ensure there willll be no rubbing or discomfort.

• **Upper** - Available in a range of materials to suit the end-user. Some safety shoes feature abrasion-resistant and water-repellent coatings to provide further protection.

• **Insole** - often removable so the end-user can modify.

• **Mid-sole** - some safety shoes feature a steel or composite mid-sole to prevent puncture injuries from nails or metal debris.

• **Sole** - Strong and sturdy. Typically incorporates slip-resistant and shock absorption features.

• **Heel fit** - Should be a good fit with no slipping during movement.

• **Toe fit** - Toes should have free movement, but shouldn't be able to touch the toe cap.

• **Weight** - Choose a metal-free safety shoe when lightweight protection is required.

• **Comfort** - A safety shoe made with breathable materials and moisture-wicking properties will keep feet comfortable during prolonged wear.

*What does the safety toecap standard EN 12568:2010 mean?*

EN 12568 S:2010 outlines the testing requirements to safety toecaps before they are used in safety footwear. This includes corrosion resistance and impact protection of 200 Joules minimum.

• 2010 - This is the year the safety standard was updated.

### FAQs
*Can you be exempt from wearing safety shoes?*

In short, no. If a risk assessment has identified safety risks in your working environment, your employer must provide suitable safety shoes and you must wear them.

*Are safety shoes bad for feet?*

When fitted correctly, safety shoes will protect and support the feet and won't cause any harm to them. When purchasing safety shoes, take into consideration any pre-existing health issues and speak to the advisor when fitting. Like all footwear, when poorly fitted, safety shoes can cause pain and injuries, but when fitted correctly they can protect you from potentially life-changing injuries.

If your safety shoes hurt when you wear them or you feel they are causing issues with your feet, inform your line manager and request a re-fit.
