What are clocks?

Clocks are a mechanical or digital device that count and display the number of seconds, minutes and hours in a day. A large visual aid mounted on walls or freestanding on desks or floors, clocks are the larger alternative to the wristwatch for monitoring the time of day and night.

Why buy a clock?

For the day when you forget your watch, or a when a quick glance at the time is needed, a clock is an essential office accessory. The best way to keep your workforce on track, a reliable timepiece will ensure shift start and end times are followed and make sure that no-one's late for that important meeting.

Clock types

There's a hook designed for about every requirement. Compatible for use with wire, rope and cords they're a handy piece of equipment to have around.

Analogue clocks  -   The basic design of an analogue clock features the traditional clockface with numbers equally spaced to signify twelve hours of the day. Two hands, the short hour hand and the long minute hand, move around the clockface to display the time. Some analogue clocks also feature a hand to display the seconds.

Auditory clocks   -   These clocks are used in large public spaces to announce the time using a voice recording or a computer-generated voice.

Digital clocks   -   A precise timekeeper, the digital clock comes in a wide range of designs. It either displays a twenty-four-hour clock notation, or a twelve hour clock notation, usually on an LED or LCD screen.

Electronic word clocks   -   Instead of a numeric display, these clocks display the time in word form.

Tactile clocks   -   Used for the blind or visually impaired, these clocks display the time using braille or raised numbers that can be traced with the fingers.

Multi display clocks   -   Also called timezone clocks, this type of timepiece will accurately display the times in different countries at that moment.

Considerations when choosing clocks

Scale - for an office wall clock, consider the size of the office and the size the face needs to be for the person sitting furthest away to see the time.

Type - the choice between digital or analogue can be easy for some. A wall-mounted digital clock must be wired in, while an analogue clock will need a periodic change of batteries. A digital clock will keep the time accurately, while an analogue clock may lose a few minutes here and there as it ages.

FAQs

Why is the minute hand of an analogue clock longer?

It's easy to identify the closest hour on an analogue clock, however, the minute hand points to the smaller, five-minute groupings between the hour notations. And so, to accurately tell the time, the minute hand is longer, with some designs featuring an extended point on this hand to allow for a clear reading of the time.
