Measuring Wheel

Cromwell stocks a range of quality measuring wheels. With products from brand like Bosch® and other big names you'll be sure to find the right tooling solution for you.

What are measuring wheels?

One of the oldest measuring tools in existence, measuring wheels make measuring boundaries and larges spaces easy. With several sizing options suitable for multiple applications, they take fast and easy measurements whilst you walk the distance.

Modern measuring wheels are much more accurate than those used in the 1600s and although they are no longer used for measuring long distances from town to town, the method of their usage hasn't really changed.

Measuring wheels consist of a wheel attached to a long handle with a grip. As the wheel turns, it marks off the amount of times it rotates, quickly calculating distance. The accuracy of the measurement is determined by the flatness of the surface being measured, as elevations cause the readings to be less reliable.

Why use a measuring wheel?

Whilst there are more accurate tools to measure distances with, measuring wheels are still an efficient way to measure distance for several reasons.

• They are operated by only one person. You won't need to help to hold a tape or to ensure it doesn't move.

• You can measure perimeters in one continuous movement by changing the tool's position.

• Measuring wheels are continuous, meaning they don't have a finite length at which they stop measuring.

• Their ease of use, all you have to do is walk and push the wheel along using the handle.
Some wheels allow you to mark as you measure.

Considerations when choosing a measuring wheel

There are a couple of factors that come into play when choosing the right measuring wheel for the job.

Notably, the size of the wheel. Smaller wheels are better for indoor spaces of size, where as large outdoor spaces will be easier handled by a larger wheel.

FAQs

How do I use a measuring wheel?

Start at the point to be measured and push the wheel along the distance, walking at an even pace for greater accuracy. When you reach the endpoint lift the wheel to avoid unnecessary rotations which will compromise the accuracy.

What are the best measuring wheels for outdoors?

For outdoor areas, it is recommended that you use a measuring wheel with a large wheel. This will give you greater stability as outdoor surfaces can be less even, as well as make the distance walked easier. Smaller wheels can easily get knocked of track on uneven ground and walking with them will require a slightly slower pace as the smaller wheel covers less ground in a rotation.
