Taper Pins

Browse our wide selection of taper pins from our own brand, Qualfast®. Turned from high-quality steel, our taper pins comply with European sizing standards to meet precise requirements.

What are taper pins?

Taper pins are exactly what their name suggests, a tapered pin insert used to precisely locate and securely pin tapered holes. The tapered shaft provides a self-centring feature.

Why taper pins?

Easy to install using a hammer or driver (for threaded variants), taper pins have the added advantage of being reusable

When are taper pins used?

Used widely in mechanical engineering, taper pins act as low torque fasteners on large machines and are often custom-made for a specific application.

Taper pin types

• Standard   -   Used to hold a position in a tapered hole to connect components

• Externally threaded   -   Used exclusively to connect moving components on a circular axis, such as the hands of a clock, this type features threads at the larger end of the pin which act as a removal device using a tightened nut

• Internally threaded   -   Also used as a removal device, the internal thread acts as an anchor for removal in machines where the pin must sit flush inside the tapered hole

Considerations when choosing taper pins

Type - identify the application to decide on the best type of taper pin to use.

Dimensions - to find the right sizing for you, establish the width and length of the tapered hole you wish to fill and choose accordingly. If the tapered pin isn't available in the size you require, consider having a bespoke pin made.

Taper pin jargon buster

There are several quality standards associated with taper pins, so, to keep you up to date we've outlined the details of one of them to help you make your best purchasing decision.

What does the standard ISO 2339:1986 mean?

ISO 2339:1986 outlines the technical requirements of unhardened taper pins. This standard covers all metric taper pins with diameters between 0.6mm to 50mm, and acts as an equivalent to German standard, DIN 1 or DIN EN 22339.

Let's break it down...

• ISO - This standard was written and published by the International Organization for Standardization

• 2339 - The assigned legislation number

• 1986 - This is the year this standard was originally published and has since been reviewed and confirmed in 2017

FAQs

How are taper pins installed?

Taper pins allow for a snug fit inside a tapered hole and can be installed by tapping the pin into the hole with a hammer (in the case of standard pins), or using a driver for threaded style pins. In the case of standard taper pins, some engineers utilise a pin punch followed by a centre punch to ensure complete fill of the hole and a flush finish on the machine's surface.

How are taper pins made?

Taper pins are made from steel, either alloyed, stainless or carbon and are turned to achieve precise measurements.
