Roofing Bolts

Distinguished by their large surface area head, threaded body and square washer and nut fastening system, roofing bolts - also known as gutter bolts - are designed specifically for attaching two pieces of material together. Normally manufactured from steel and often finished with a protective coating such as zinc, roofing bolts are able to thread into thinner materials than other types of bolts without causing damage. Here at Cromwell, we have a wide range of roofing bolts from our quality own brand Qualfast®.

Why roofing bolts?

Roofing bolts are designed specifically for bearing more weight, making them ideal for joining thinner timber, metal or other wood materials without causing damage to the object. They are characterised by their large surface area heads which are usually hexagonal or mushroom in shape, their threaded rod body and a washer and nut to secure the bolt. Where other bolts and screws may struggle to bear weight across their surface without damaging the material, roofing bolts are manufactured with this specific purpose in mind.

Roofing bolt types

Roofing bolts tend to vary based upon their driving features and head type. Whilst it's a staple of all roofing bolts to have a large head, the shape does vary between bolts. The most common are outlined below.

Hexagon head   -   Exactly as it sounds, hexagon head bolts require a spanner, wrench or socket set to turn them. These provide a higher torque than other shaped bolts.

Slotted mushroom/truss head   -   These types of roofing bolts are distinguished by their wide, slightly domed head. They possess a lower profile than standard rounded head screws or bolts.

FAQs

What are roofing bolts used for?
Roofing bolts can be used for general construction or maintenance work, but are primarily suited for use when trying to connect two pieces of thinner materials together. This is due to the large head of the bolts, which spreads the weight across the head better than other fasteners.
