What are car seat covers?

Car seat covers are designed to protect the seat material of your car, van or tractor from work-related dirt and dust. They're available in a range of sizes, including singles, doubles, and triples to suit all types of vehicle seats and can also be bought in packs of disposable covers to use ad hoc if a job has been particularly messy.

Why buy car seat covers?

Typically made with liquid-repellent nylon material with a PVC backing, car seat covers can be zipped or tied so they can be removed for washing when required. Disposable polythene seat protectors are often used in cars to protect seats while in the workshop to prevent any oil transfer onto the seat material.

Considerations when choosing car seat covers

Which seat - when protecting vehicle seats, the onus is typically placed on the driver and passenger's seats. However, if a vehicle is used for transporting multiple persons to the site, a full set may be required.

Features - if the seat in question features a seat-mounted airbag, then the cover you purchase must be airbag compatible.

Shape - car seat covers can be purchased for shaped seats with high backs, wings, or armrests.

Car seat covers jargon buster

Seat covers are typically used in vehicles that will be exposed to regular soilings, like work vans and cars, tractors, and other industrial-type vehicles. It's important, therefore, that the materials used in the manufacture of these covers can tolerate high use and a range of soiling.

Nylon - This is the go-to material for jobs like this one, as this man-made material is extremely strong and elastic to allow for universal fitting to seats. It doesn't absorb water and spilt liquids sit on the surface of the material to be wiped away with a cloth or tissue. One of the most important properties of nylon is its resistance to oils and many other chemicals, which makes it the ideal choice as a high-performance seat cover.

Polythene - For disposable seat protection, polythene is an excellent polymer to use. It's a low-cost material and flexible to fit over a range of seat types. It delivers good water and chemical resistance which ensures the excellent temporary protection of vehicle seats.

FAQs

Can any seat cover fit any car?

Universal-sized seat covers are designed to fit any car. For van seats, look for a universal van seat cover and you can't go far wrong. You can use the make and model of your vehicle to purchase some custom seat covers to exactly fit the make of your seats; however, this can be very expensive, especially when covering all of the seats in the vehicle.

Should you put seat covers on leather?

This is down to personal preference. Car leather is treated with high-performance in mind and is rigorously tested to ensure good resistance to heavy use and soiling. Car leather is thicker than the leather used for sofas and, while the natural properties of leather make it resistant to water and some chemicals, car seats are coated to enhance these properties.

The downside to leather is that it gets extremely hot in the summer and cold in the winter, which is a reason to add a cover to combat the discomfort these extremes in temperature may cause.
