Backing Pads

What are backing pads?

A backing pad is a disc shaped backing that secures and supports accessories used for grinding, sanding and polishing. The abrasive is held on the face of the backing pad either by a locking disc or hook and loop fasteners.

Why backing pads?

Backing pads help improve the overall performance of power tools driving the abrasive disc. Depending on the type of pad they can function in wet and dry conditions and can improve efficiency of sanding and grinding on both flat and contoured surfaces.

Types of backing pads

There are several different types of backing pads suitable for various applications.

• Hook and loop - The abrasive disc is help in place with a hook and loop fastening. These feature a foam layer for sanding curved surfaces.

• Low profile - These are ideal for sanding applications and are a staple of woodworking and the automotive industry. They are usually fitted with thicker foam for a good amount of comfortability. Medium density versions are used for intermediate and finishing applications, whilst high density is used in flash and seam removal applications.

• Random orbit dual action - These types offer support for PSA adhesive coated discs. They feature a PU moulded construction with a poly backplate, typically reinforced with fibreglass or glass.

• PSA - These are cushioned pads for PSA or glue-on discs and are designed for straight rotation.

• Spindle pads - Featuring threaded removable shanks, spindle pads drive PSA or H&L discs of smaller diameters. The undersized diameter of the component helps protect the edges.

• Non-woven SCD - Grinders and sanders rely on surface condition elements. These pads feature flats on the rear for easy installation or removal.

• No-spin - These pads minimize damage to nearby vertical surfaces during polishing and finishing.

• Zero burn - These pads help minimise the dependence on resin pads to control the heat during operation.

Considerations when choosing a backing pad

• Sizing - These are grouped by diameter.

• Attachment - What is the method for attaching the pad to the tool?

• The surface of the workpiece - Thin, firm pads are preferable for flat surfaces. Thick, medium to soft pads are recommended for curved surfaces.

• Grit of the disc - The coarser the grit the firmer the pad needed. A grit disc with a low grit ranking would require a firmer pad, whilst a higher grit (intermediate and finishing grades) would benefit from a soft to medium pad.

Why use a backing pad with sanding discs?

Using a backing pad allows for airflow behind the sanding disc which a massively positive effect on the longevity of the disc. Additionally the increase in airflow allows debris to flow out improving contact and sanding effectiveness.
